Tigris.org's Vision

Much of the success of open-source development has resulted from each developer adding value within his or her individual area of expertise.

The Tigris platform provides the infrastructure needed for key developers to collaborate effectively across geographic distances and organizational boundaries.  These rapidly assembled teams can quickly react to technical challenges or create new opportunities.

The Tigris platform can benefit software development organizations in two main ways.  First, Tigris can provide a complete solution for open source development hosting.  Hosting an open source project can help existing software development organizations leverage the skills and interest of the open-source community.

Encouraging Developer Contributions

Tigris is an open source project. That means that anyone can become a member of the Tigris community and contribute.  The first step is to understand the reasons for contributing and why they might be right for you.

About the Name "Tigris"

The name "Tigris" refers to a river in the middle east. About 5000 years ago, when most people were still hunter-gatherers, one of the world's first civilizations started to form in the fertile valley between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. This region is called Mesopotamia or Sumer. The Sumerians devised techniques for irrigation and agriculture. The resulting civilization gave rise to many other inventions: government, city planning, a code of law, early geometry, accounting, division of labor, barter, the cuneiform system of writing, and public education.

Throughout history, rivers have been an enabling factor in the birth and growth of cities around the world: rivers supply drinking water and irrigate crops; they provide transportation and hydro-power; they also bring a food supply and wash away waste.

We see the Tigris platform as an enabling factor for open source communities. Tigris-hosted communities are fertile places for ideas to grow.

Founders of Tigris and Contributors

Jason Robbins and Niels Mayer are founding contributors to the Tigris project.  Questions and discussions should go to the mailing list where everyone can see and comment on them.  To contact them directly, use the links below.

Jason Robbins (US-Pacific)

Jason Robbins is a longtime contributor to the Open Source community.  He created an open source software design tool using the Unified Modeling Language notation. The project, named ArgoUML was launched in 1998.  The ArgoUML project today includes more than 19,000 registered users and over 150 developers. Robbins' areas of interest and expertise span a variety of topics including evolutionary software development, usability and UI design techniques, knowledge-based design tools, software architecture, end-user programming and software reuse.
